Return Paths | Mixed Signal PCB Design: Part One
One of the fundamental aspects of any circuit diagram is the return current path. In a circuit diagram and a schematic diagram, the path that electric current follows to return to the low potential side of a power source should be obvious, but it may not be so obvious in a PCB.

Return Path Design Rule
High-speed signals create electromagnetic fields that can cause cross talk or data errors unless proper return paths are provided. Proper return paths allow noise currents to return to ground through very low impedance, eliminating any problems. The new Return Path design rule monitors return paths and checks for a continuous signal return path on the designated reference layer above or below the signals targeted by the rule.

Design a Quick Return Crank Rocker – 4 Bar Linkage Graphical Method
When designing Quick Return Crank Rockers using Four Bar Linkage Graphical Methods, you must always check your answer using the Grashof Criterion to verify your solution actually works (sometimes it doesn’t!).
Designing a Quick Return 4 bar mechanism requires solving for crank, coupler, rocker, and ground lengths (but some can be chosen as givens). Crank Coupler Toggle Positions as alpha/beta crank angles are solved first using the advance return time ratio, then the rocker length and ground length are solved next using trigonometry, law of sines, and law of cosines.
I end with discussion of Grashof’s Law, Grashof’s Theorem, Grashof’s Condition, which all mean the same thing – that you can determine if your crank can fully rotate by comparing the longest + shortest link lengths to the le...

The Return on Design
For as long as business has sought to gauge success, creativity has resisted measurement. Now, the Design Management Institute (DMI) has developed a new tool that measures the value of design. Brands that lead with design are dominating the market and the DMI’s Design Value Index puts forth the metrics to prove it. Their research shows that when businesses elevate the strategic role of design, they lead the S&P by an extraordinary 228%.

Learn how to create basic kerb returns and cul-de-sacs by using the Kret Convert to Computators command within 12d Model! We also go through some first principles with a super alignment to see what this tool actually does for the designer so it can be modified to cater for more complex cases.
Difficulty Level: Basic/Intermediate

When designing Quick Return Crank Rockers using Four Bar Linkage Graphical Methods, you must always check your answer using the Grashof Criterion to verify your solution actually works (sometimes it doesn’t!).
Designing a Quick Return 4 bar mechanism requires solving for crank, coupler, rocker, and ground lengths (but some can be chosen as givens). Crank Coupler Toggle Positions as alpha/beta crank angles are solved first using the advance return time ratio, then the rocker length and ground length are solved next using trigonometry, law of sines, and law of cosines.
I end with discussion of Grashof’s Law, Grashof’s Theorem, Grashof’s Condition, which all mean the same thing – that you can determine if your crank can fully rotate by comparing the longest + shortest link lengths to the lengths of the two middle links.
